Website update: Got the images to change sucessfully. However the dynamic text is being a problem seeming I'm getting an error which is normally simply solved therefore I any clue as to why it happening escapes me.

I'm working on it but I think I'll need to start again with a fresh head.

Beside that, I've got the java nearly working for the drop down menu -- I can't believe they wanted a WORKING website. Srsly fml, I knew it would be like this but still. FML.

This is the style guide for The Illawarra Feltmakers Inc, - the first incorporated group of feltmakers in NSW. It provides an avenue for those interested in the craft of feltmaking to meet, learn more skills and felt together on a social basis.

The logo consists of two parts: the pictogram (essentially the emblem and recognisable image for the company) and the logotype which is one which has been created specially to suit the nature and feel of the organisation.

The shield pictogram draws from the many origins and concepts which arise from the complex and multi-faceted nature of feltmaking. The abstract placing of the shapes is a diagrammatic representation of the contemporary direction the Illawarra Feltmakers are moving towards. The shapes, styling and pattern created is reminiscent of the ornamental and tribal origins of feltmaking.

The use of the shielf itself as a containing feature of these elements effectively treats the company as one which is also corporate which an established “coat of arms,” showing the art of feltmaking to be both elegant and beautiful as well as cemented in historic origins.

When first approached to redesign the identity of the Illawarra Feltmakers, we were asked to maintain elements of their original identity. This involved the use of the drops of water, the swirl and the hand which is diagrammatic of the process of feltmaking.

This completed logo not only effectively incorporates each of these elements with equal importance but also shows a reflection of the origins and art of feltmaking.

Consistent application and precise production of a logo is vital to maintaining the integrity of the companys identity. The purpose of this style guide is to provide a visual guide and general set of rules which will ensure this consistency and prevent compromising the strength of the company’s identity.

It is understood that all users of this logo will comply with the basic rules and regulations as set out in this guide.

Thank you,

Blackout.

Tshirt and apron,

Hey team why don't we use iron on prints for the tshirts and the apron, that way the felters can replicate it all by them selves, otherwise they can get them professionally printed if they have enough money.

Also I think we should get make a document that states where all the stuff that we made by hand can be reproduced professionally.

Also also I got all the materials for the box, and I am working on it now....

Hi Black Out Team,
I am very sorry I have been uncontactable for the past week. I am sure the responses of the rest of the committee were very considered though, and I
agree with their letter sent to you earlier by Eleanor.
I haer that the meeting at our community centre went very well and the women were very impressed with your willingness to really try to understand
what felting is, and what it can be.
Thankyou for your enthusiasm.

black or white!?

huh...

sooo...

well... ok they don't want the blacked out version of the logo!

do we listen to them or not?

to be or not to be!?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Blackout Team,

I've held off replying until the eleventh hour in the vain hope that I could contact Anita so that she could add her input. She is still in NZ. However, it looks as though we shall have to proceed with out her.

The rest of the Committee were unanimous in voting for option 1a. We definitely are of the opinion that the shield would need to be at least the same size as the lettering and we much prefer it to not be of any colour. We're mindful that if the logo and shield are too small the design could become unidentifiable and look more like a blob; for example, if it were to be used on a business card.

We were all very impressed by the mock up for the complimentary card and the letterhead. Having the wool fibre look down the right hand side is so very appropriate. The way you've done the photos looks great too so we've nothing to add on that score.

Thank you for presenting us with these options and all the very best with the next step of the project.

Eleanor

reply wow that was quick

Hello Blackout Team,

Thank you for the latest logo proposal. We will do our best to notify you of our preference by the 27th. Unfortunately Anita ( our President ) is in New Zealand all this week so we'll have to do this without her input.

We're pleased you enjoyed your visit to last workshop and hope you've found a use for your creations. We appreciated your hands-on approach.

Meeting with jo

Alright guys, had the meeting with Jo and she got feed back from the feltmakers about how awesome we are (win.) anyway I think we really got this one in the bag so it's good to know all our aplications will not just be for not because they'll most likely go with our logo. -celebrate (hopfully not premature)-

Anyway, Jo loved the typeface I made, she said it perfectly encompassed the feltmakers and what they are trying to be with the organic hand made type which doesn't look computer made yet is. Although this is good that she loves it, she loves it a little too much, as such she made some suggestion about the logo pictogram...

she basically wants it to be of less importance to logo, which I'm not sure about, she did the second black one below.

She stated that the border around it made the shape 'too busy' which I don't know if I agree with. Anyway, there 3 options I was thinking we should submit to the feltmakers and just let them choose. Will delay getting the stamp BUT we still have plenty of time, we could get test prints of other stamps to see what it'd look like on different card if you wanted to do something whilst we get a reply.

Anyway, thoughts?

Monday, May 17, 2010

Our logo looks like INDIAN architecture AND DAIRY icecream
INDIAN
------------ = 1
DIARY
(cancel each other out seem icecream melts in indian and they worship cows therefore would not eat dairy.)

Therefore our design do not look islamic / indian / dairy product.
ended up with stuff coming up today so only jst got home but said id so something so iv just done reaaaally quick tests but im tired and going to bed.

basically jst live traced a few shields and cheated my morphing them... mainly jst to give some perspective as to how our shape fits as opposed to say sharper edges or more boxy or squary looks

shields shields shields

yo bros

Here's a random collection of shields... just to look at the shape.

will try and draw some shield shapes when i get a chance later tonight.

felt ????

just a few questions for the feltmakers..

• Potentially how many of each kind of stationery would they be needing and how often?
e.g. postcards - how many will they want to have printed and how often?

• How long does it take to make an A1 size piece of felt?

• Preference with stamping vs printing? Up to about how many until they don't want to handmake them?

• How expensive is felt? e.g. could potentially be using a bit for our work. e.g. bookmarks also.

• Can we get a copies of their past newsletters?

• Have they currently got a printery they use or would they like us to find them quotes for a good, cost efficient printer for them?

so feltable

Hey guys sorry it took me a while to post this but these were some of the images i showed from the last meeting

Minutes from the meeting we had on the 27/4/10

• Handmade
• Dainty vs Substantial bulky and tactile
• Tactile Nature
• Textures
• Dense
• Ripped edges

We went through each member with their ideas and approach to logo designs. Jesse went for more elegant and emblamatic, Emily went for more contemporary and diagrammatic, Mitch went for a very tactile, touchable, bold, approach and Annie went for a more ornamental, tribal look.

These four elements are all important. We made a moodboard.

Were you still going to put up the stuff from that Jesse? cause you have the brainstormed ideas and concepts :S

Questions:
- Festivals? Do they need any extra content for these?
- How many postcards do they intend to print> How regularly and at what cost? (we thinking about using felt on the back of the postcards)

We want: contemporary yet traditional or tacile, detailed, tribal yet sleek and pictogramic.

FELTMAKER REPLY

Hello Annie,

I'm Eleanor, the lady who was with Anita at the meeting. Just in case Anita doesn't see your e-mail in time, I'm writing to let you know that the feltmakers group isn't meeting as expected at Shell Cove this Saturday ( 1st May). The reason for this is that we're taking part in The Robertson Wool Fest 2010. However, we will be back at our usual meeting place on and from 15th May.

You would be most welcome to come along on the 15th May to see us in action. We'll have items there that you can photograph.

Regards
Eleanor

Felt When Felt

When i think of felt and its size and weight as a tactile experience in combination with its primitive making process, i cant really see its association with the dainty, fine and intricate. So i feel the exact opposite approach would be appropriate. Not so much bulky and cumbersome rather something that would feel substantial, sizeable and ...moderate (for search of a better word) in your hand.

The design and creative implications of this would for example be using a significantly heavier GSM paper, that also would have been cold pressed. Hence adding to the tactile experience that emily also discussed, due to cold pressed papers pronounced surface, (we could even use torn edges on the postcard for example to add to the touchie feelie vibe). Another application of this idea would be in the website, in giving buttons and links a visual texture that would entice the viewer into touching the screen.

See you all soon,

first thoughts about felt..

So the main thing that stood out from the meeting is that a large part of the appeal of making felt is the tactile experience.

It is a labour intensive hands on process and is a group, community activity.

It is also the oldest textile.

Everything needs to be very easy to use and highly functional. Users of the website and group members are usually retired people.

I think Annie covered most of it..(you are a blogging/note taking legend Annie!)

See you guys tomorrow..

WHERE EVERYTHING IS AT

hi guys!

BROCHURE ARTWORK
hey em - i like the work you did, i think we should wait for jesse to leave some feedback. perhaps maybe we could use that as the basis for adding some more stuff over the top? i was thinking some more abstracty brushstrokes... or else really drippy watercolour ... or some elements to relate the artwork back to design as for me, ... my main worry is keeping a consistent image and we need to make sure the artworks we produce are consistent with the look and feel of the company corporate style and image.

BUSINESS CARD
received your package this morning also em and it looks pretty spiffy buttttt - as i said in the text yesterday - we NEED TO USE THE PRESS for better quality embossing.

this means we absolutely need to have that woodblock cutout back in wollongong before monday in my opinion. and this is just my opinion right now, feel free to chuck out some extra opinions but i THINK that perhaps we need to find out if we can come in on sunday???? to do the woodblocking.

it really is probably important to have you back for that final leg of this on sunday i think. and again this is JUST WHAT I THINK and i havent consulted jesse.

we will be printing onto the businesscards with some spray robyn is providing us but i think we are doing that maybe tomorrow or something? i need to talk to jesse about that. perhaps it would be best to do the spray and the embossing together. and im worried robyn wont be there on sunday to let us into the print rooms in which case ideally we woulda wanted to do embossing and the printing of businescards tomorrow.

IMPORTANT WE SORT THIS OUT ASAP GUYS.

on another note, here is the cards i designed yesterday, have a geeeeezer emily! and oh i still really am not sold on the spacing of my name. but its so short its frustrating i think ill try kerning it.
BOOKLET

i took the document to the printery in unanderra this morning and they weren't very friendly and didn't seem to wanna listen to me explain wat we wanted which was infuriating but i made them listen to me anyway and repeated the instructions over and over and over even though he didn't appear to be listening to me.

stupid man.

he said we should be able to pick it up on friday around lunchtime though. 3 copies unbounded but with the holes put in so we can bind it ourselves with string.

the booklet my main concern is that the bleeed is not really on all the pages and unfortunately there was not much more i could do about it. i tried over and over and over and over and honeslty resaved that file a dozen times or more yesteryda and repackaged it times a million and in the end.. i dunno why its stubborn.

the print man said next time don't set them out as spreads cause that was why it hapened. soo im sorry if the print comes out dodgy around the edges. i tried my hardest to fix it when i notice the prob late last night.

WIP SHEETS

Apparenlty we also need to fill out a group document of WIP sheets. i did not know this. i thought we only needed to fill in our individual weekly time sheet.

do you guys know?

STILL TO BE DONE AND URGENT

  • Business cards are my big worry now, embossing it needs to be done in the printrooms and not under bricks i really think if we are going to do it it needs to be done right.

  • Brochure artwork, if we are to work on it anymore or just place that image in straight away, it needs to be done

  • The indiviudal blurb - emily has done - i will do mine tonight. emilyif you make any changes to your blurb just forward them onto jesse or post them onto blog

  • We have bought the material for the box and jesse is making it now i think we should apply the same spray transfer ink method to the box and print BLACKOUT on it

  • we still need to find string to bind out books together and i suggest it should be sorta brown twiny stuff to match our recycled finish on most of our stuff e.g. business cards but thats jst an idea. wat do you guys think?
PLease write some replies and feedback on the stuff i brought up.... its really hard to get this all done and im getting just that lil bit stressed out now :p

and if you want a rapidshared copy of the thing i gave to the printers, i will upload on request after you reply everything else!!!!!

more artwork

So here is my new experimenting and the scan of just the image in case you guys want to play with it..
Hope book collating went well. you guys are legends!

artwork..

Here is the artwork. I'm really struggling with it. Also the big left white patch on the left has some textures underneath that aren't showing up and the colours are more subtle..
If you click on the white boxes that is the stationary examples..

http://rapidshare.com/files/372621008/blackoutstationaryMU2.jpg.html
Here is the rapidshare link for the stationary letterheads and envelopes..

Also,
here is the rapidshare link for the artwork..which I'm totally not happy with.. http://rapidshare.com/files/372623567/figureart3.jpg.html

Also, I have a feeling these rapidshare links might not work.. but I don't know what I'm doing wrong..

business cards and paper scans...

alright. business cards are in the post, but there is really only one that I think is deep enough that I did in time to send. I'm doing more and will send more tomorrow, but with the extras you can try doing the other side.

I played with ink but I think it will be hard to make it not bleed over the edge as this seems to be quite unpredictable. See what you think when the cards arrive and let me know because I can happily keep trying. ps sorry the pic is so blurry..didn't realise til now..
Here are a couple of scans of paper, I'll rapid share them if you want any. just let me know.

STYLEGUIDE UPDATE IMPORTANT TO CONTRIBUTE

Hey another update on the styleguide. I feel it is important you guys are all happy with what is written so please read through it and let me know if theres anything WRITTEN which you want changed, or think could be worded better.

Finished typing - now need to start design. Need your approval before doing so!

Things to be changed so far:

- "Conglomerate" will probably be changed.

- Images should they be given more space?

- The someone logo is still stuffing up ill look at that later

- need to actually decide on real images, some are just placeholders and some are blurry (Anyone with ideas for what images to put???)

- i found a typo on accompanying. oops. the rest of the grammar should be ok?

- the headings will be taken out but that was just a general guide for me to write it out. you guys didn't want headings right? just the tagging up the top and the bolding at the beginning of each paragraph?

------------

Issues to address:

- I'd like to add a bit of the textures and paint slotches etc to the styleguide, opinions?

- did we still want to add a texture to the background of the style guide? right now it is jst a muted colour

- i don't yet have the applications to put into the styleguide and if we are printing this i need some representation of the business card and letterhead by tomorow :S
http://rapidshare.com/files/372525471/BLACKBOOK2.pdf.html

styleguide booklet update

Hey guys

I'm working on the styleguide at the moment.

Had to restart a whole new document as we worked out that the book should be bigger as we don't need to imposition if we are binding it ourselves.

we can print each page on an A4 paper (or 2 to an A3 sheet) and crop it down to size. Effectively I have kept the ratio but made it larger which is prob for the best as they originally did ask for A3 sheets... so now the size is 180 mm by 240 mm. draw it out and take a look and let me know what you think

Also the indesign file i had was empty of all our images which was annoying. we need to rememebr to package instead of just save. iv put everything back in but i know that SOMEONE has a bit of an issue with the background.

here is an example of where i'm up to. could you read through the text and let me know if there are any changes? iv mainly kept to what we wrote but just hopefully wrote it out abit more succinctly.

the images are not final but i jst like to have them there to get an idea and ihavent actually done much on the design mainly its jst the text i want you to look at

http://rapidshare.com/files/372510930/BLACKBOOK.pdf.html

...

Ok, so this is where I am at. Business cards are finally working, wetting with hot water first and then using three clamps to hold it is the best way. I'll send the few that worked out tomorrow. Do you want me to fill the inprint with ink? I'm not sure.

The artworks, I've done a few various things. I'll put two up, the first is a photo and the second a watercolour... Didn't really plan on the different mediums but there you go. Let me know what you think. If neuther is suitable that is fine, just let me know where your thoughts are heading. Also, for the third I was thinking of using some of the barcode stuff, I inversed the watercolour one I did and am liking it...
(Also, I did just get a bit excited about inversing so let me know if it is too much...)
I'll wait for a bit of feedback!

business cards...

Just letting you guys know how the business cards are going. I've been putting them under bricks which is mostly successful. Not quite deep enough but each time it gets better. I'll keep trying different things. I've done a few artworks for the poster but I'll play on the computer with them more.. My next two days are pretty busy but hopefully I'll post some stuff up soon. Also, was just looking throught the blog for individual report thing and blackout was a name I put in my first post...ha! because our use of this name can't get any more ironic..
hope you guys have a brilliant easter!

redo of weekly timesheet

Slight issue is I can't open the style guide as I am still using cs3
I do have CS4 but it is not yet installed but I'll hopefully get Bill to install it sometime then I can work on it.

In the meantime, I just refined the Timesheets again, really slight changes but still IMPORTANT!

The weekly timesheet (updated) can be downloaded at this link. The others I'll only upload if you need them for some reason...

You need to fill out 2 weeks worth of this so feel free to get started whenever.
